Application procedures

The minimum qualification required to enrol in a doctoral-level programme is a Master's or equivalent or a Laurea Magistrale. The minimum number of ECTS required is 300.

The PhD call for admissions is issued by the rector of the university, who is also responsible for the diffusion of the call, including its publication in the official journal of the Italian Republic. The call states:

  • The total number of graduates to be admitted to the doctoral programme
  • The number and amount of scholarships to be given, after a comparative evaluation of merit
  • Methods for the admission tests

Applicants should contact universities individually.

In many Italian universities the admission test continues to be a written and / or oral examination. Some universities that receive applications from doctoral candidates from other continents have developed a selection process based on a CV and other documents, so that candidates can apply directly from their home country.

The level of proficiency required in the local language depends on the institution. It is also possible for international students to pursue doctoral studies in English.
