Research and development

With a gross domestic expenditure on research and development (R&D) of 3.4%* as a percentage of the gross domestic product (GDP), the Republic of Korea is the fifth country worldwide for investment in research and development. When relating the expenditure on R&D to the number of resident patent fillings, the Republic of Korea is even ranked second.**

The Korean government aims to enhance the national research and development system by interconnecting different policies in this field, by creating and reinforcing research institutes and by strengthening quality assurance measures.***
