Economic and political relations with the European Union

Japan, a major economic power and one of the world's top exporters and importers, is a key economic and trade partner of the European Union.

Comprehensive information on Japan's economy, the third largest in the world, and EU Japan trade relations can be found on the website of the European Commission's Directorate General for Trade.

The 1991 Joint Declaration on relations between the European Community and its Member States and Japan established the objectives and framework for political dialogue between the EU and Japan at all levels. This was followed by a ten-year action plan adopted in 2001 which broadened the political cooperation between the European Union and Japan.

The website of the Delegation of the European Union to Japan contains detailed information on EU Japan political relations
