Foreign language training

The standard school curriculum makes foreign language learning compulsory at the level of secondary education. In 2011 foreign language activities were also introduced as a compulsory subject of the fifth and sixth year in Japan's primary schools. Both curricula especially foresee that English should be taught as a foreign language. The government is aware of the growing demand by employers for high-level language skills and also supports foreign language training at the level of higher education.*
