Academic and research cooperation

The research funding agency, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), supported by the government, plays an important role in the administration of Japan's scientific and academic programmes and notably allocates fellowships to young researchers and promotes international research cooperation.

JSPS has ten overseas offices of which four in Europe (Bonn, London, Stockholm and Strasbourg).

International exchange programmes are also supported by the public Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) which allocates Student Exchange Support Program Scholarships to international and Japanese students including doctoral candidates.

Various initiatives exist to promote and enhance the academic and scientific relations between Japan and the European Union, including the following:

The 7th Framework Programme for Research

The ICI-ECP Education Cooperation Programme of the European Commission

Erasmus Mundus partnerships between European and non-European higher education institutions.
