Application procedures

The application procedure varies according to the type of doctoral programme.

The selection procedure for an individual doctorate is rather informal and often depends on a professor's willingness to act as a doctoral supervisor. Candidates should contact directly the professor they would like to work with an outline or idea of their dissertation project. In some cases the doctoral candidate can work as a research assistant.

The application process for structured doctoral programmes is more formalised and involves a selection committee. Scholarships are often awarded to candidates that are admitted to programmes. The application calendar depends on the institution and the programme.

The minimum qualification required to enrol in a doctoral-level programme is a Master's or equivalent.

The level of proficiency required in the local language and the possibility to pursue doctoral studies in English depend on the institution and the programme. In most cases a basic knowledge of German is helpful. The dissertation however can often be submitted in English if the supervising professor or the supervising committee agree. Some structured programmes offer course components in English or are completely offered in English.
